The Canandaigua City Democrats recruit and support individuals who are interested in standing up for democratic values and will run for local elected office. We are committed to accessible, responsive local government that encourages citizen engagement. We advocate for the beauty of Canandaigua Lake, and value our public spaces and historic legacy. We support initiatives that bring people together, welcome newcomers, and improve the community’s standard of living. We create forward-thinking policies and value new approaches that will make our community a better place for all. Please join us in our work!
We hope this message finds you well. Given the public health need to avoid in person meetings for now, the March meeting of the Canandaigua City Democrats has been canceled. Our next (tentative) meeting date is the 4th Wednesday of next month, April 22. Please stay tuned for details as to whether we will be able to meet in person or possibly online with Zoom or a similar platform.
Petitioning update: Governor Cuomo signed an executive order to reduce the number of signatures required on a petition to 30% of the previously required numbers or 1.5% of the registered voters, whichever was lower. He also shortened the petitioning period to end at 5pm on Tuesday, March 17th. Thank you so much to anyone who went out and met the signature requirement to represent your neighbors on the Ontario County Democratic Committee or collected signatures for our endorsed candidates for state and federal office.
Upcoming election: April 28th is the date for the NY Presidential Primary and Special Election for NY-27 Congressional District. Stay tuned to the Ontario County Board of Elections for any updates or changes as several other states have already postponed their scheduled primaries. Please support our endorsed candidate, Nate McMurray, to fill the vacancy in our district and again for the general election in November.
Campaign update: In order to limit the spread of COVID-19, campaigns have suspended in-person events and canvassing, but are working on alternate ways to build support for the candidates. All previously scheduled in-person postcard writing events for Nate McMurray have been canceled, but many are still writing postcards from home. In addition to Nate McMurray, please contact the campaigns directly if you are interested in volunteering for Shauna O'Toole for 54th NY State Senate or Matt Miller for 131st NY State Assembly districts.
We have about 30 Nate McMurray signs on hand with stands . Anyone who wants a Nate sign to contact Dave Poteet directly. His email is firstname.lastname@example.org and his phone for text or voice is 585-953-9472. If someone wants a sign, he will drop it at their house without dealing with them face to face. He will put the sign up in the yard or leave the sign and stand, whichever is more convenient.
We hope you will all stay positive, stay well, and stay home. Looking forward to seeing you all again in the not so distant future.
